Improving trauma care saves lives in Somalia

With bullets ricocheting off nearby walls, WHO trauma surgeon Dr Omar Saleh turns his attention to the job at hand, which is to train Somali health care workers in life-saving trauma surgery.

WHO and its partners are committed to helping improve Somalia's health sector capacity by conducting training sessions in trauma management, developing medical university curriculum, undertaking health assessments, and providing medicines and other supplies urgently needed by Somali health care facilities. Training sessions are also given in emergency obstetric care for procedures like Caesarean sections, blood transfusions and manual evacuation of placenta.

Increased violence in recent months has resulted in at least 900 conflict-related injuries and 30 deaths reported in the three main hospitals of the Somali capital during March.
