People who eat nuts, fish, poultry and fruits and vegetables are far less likely to suffer from Alzheimer’s and dementia than those who eat a high-fat dairy and red meat diet, researchers have discovered.

The two diets were the single biggest difference between people who develop Alzheimer’s and those who don’t, according to a major new study from Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

The researchers tracked 2,148 people, who were 65 years and older, and who didn’t have dementia at the start of the study. Over the four years of the study, 253 of the participants developed Alzheimer’s, and it was their diet that seemed to stand out as the one major difference from those participants who remained healthy.

Those who developed Alzheimer’s all seemed to eat a diet that was rich in high-fat dairy, red meat, organ meat, and butter, whereas healthy participants had diets rich in salad dressings, nuts, fish, tomatoes, poultry, fruits and cruciferous and dark and green leafy vegetables.
