Diseases and ConditionsBack and Neck Injuries › Corona Discharge Radiofrequency (CDR) for Pain Relief

According to the International Association for the Study of Pain, pain has been defined as "an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage." The perception of pain varies from one individual to another. But what holds true for all individuals is the fact that nobody likes to bear pain for long.
People try active forms of pain relief like analgesics, opioids, antidepressants, nerve blocks and TENS or passive forms of pain relief like hot or cold compresses, meditation techniques, etc. A form of pain relief that has been steadily gaining popularity around the world is the Corona Discharge Radiofrequency (CDR).

Although, this form of pain relief therapy was first introduced in America in the 1980s, it is only now that people are waking up to the immense potential of this non-invasive form therapy.
Let us first understand what corona discharge is all about.
Corona discharge usually occurs between two oppositely charged poles. In CDR, a corona discharge beam is produced through a hand held applicator which acts as an electrode. The beam gets attracted to the excessive free radicals present at the site of inflammation. Electrons from the CDR neutralize these free radicals.
This, in turn, normalizes the trans-membrane potential of the affected cells. As a consequence, the swelling at the inflamed area gets reduced and the person gets relief from the pain. Because of the reduction in the swelling, the normal blood flow to the area is restored and healing takes place.
CDR has been found to be effective in relieving pain in a short duration of time without producing any side effects. Multiple studies carried out both in animals and in humans have shown its effectiveness. It has been shown to reduce the swellings in the hip, knee and carpal joints of an injured elephant. It has also been shown to reduce the swelling and pain of knee joint associated with arthritis, in humans.
Physicians advocate the use of CDR in the treatment of chronic low back and neck pain. It can also be used successfully for pain relief in arthritic joints. CDR is gaining wide acceptance in the field of sport medicine. Physicians from developed countries like the U.S., Singapore and Japan are recommending CDR more often to patients suffering from chronic pain. Very soon, CDR will be the most preferred pain relief modality all over the world.
