Fighting against the tide of HIV in Ukraine

WHO's new Global Health Sector Strategy on HIV/AIDS, 2011–2015 aims to optimize the ways HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care are delivered by improving links between HIV and broader health programmes. The strategy also focuses on enhancing protection and promotion of the human rights of people in need of HIV services.

Despite progress in increasing HIV treatment and prevention services, HIV is still affecting millions of lives across the world. HIV is spreading fastest in eastern Europe and Ukraine has one of the largest burdens of HIV in the region. Progress in improving HIV services has been achieved in recent years, but, with only 10% of people needing HIV treatment actually receiving it in 2009, much more remains to be done.

Many people living with HIV are taking action to improve HIV prevention, treatment and care. This photo story documents personal accounts of impressive strengths as well as the struggles of people living with but fighting against HIV, to help themselves and others in Ukraine.
